Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a major setback in their fight to avoid relegation after Xavi Simons was ruled out for the rest of the season following a serious knee injury.

The 23 year old midfielder was stretchered off during Spurs’ 1–0 win over Wolves after a collision with Hugo Bueno. Although he initially attempted to continue, he collapsed shortly after, prompting immediate medical attention.

Early assessments suggest the injury may involve anterior cruciate ligament damage, a condition that could sideline him for several months and significantly impact his career momentum. The injury also rules him out of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Simons later expressed his frustration on social media, describing himself as “heartbroken” and struggling to process the setback. He said the injury had taken away his ability to help his team at a critical stage of the season and also ended his hopes of participating in the World Cup.

The Dutch midfielder has been one of Tottenham’s key creative players this season, making his absence a major blow as the club continues its battle to stay in the Premier League. Spurs currently sit 18th in the table, with only a few matches remaining in a tense relegation fight.

Despite the setback, Simons vowed to remain supportive of his teammates during recovery, expressing confidence that the squad could still achieve their survival target.

Tottenham manager and staff now face the challenge of reorganising the midfield structure ahead of a decisive run of fixtures, with the team’s Premier League future ing in the balance.

The club is expected to conduct further medical evaluations in the coming days to confirm the full extent of the injury and determine a recovery timeline.
