Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has publicly endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as a capable successor for the Lagos governorship ahead of the 2027 elections.
The endorsement came during a closed door meeting held at Lagos House Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest for the state’s top seat before members of the State Executive Council and key leaders of the All Progressives Congress.
Speaking after the meeting, Sanwo Olu described Hamzat as experienced, prepared, and deeply familiar with the workings of government. He highlighted their seven year working relationship, noting that the deputy governor has consistently demonstrated integrity, loyalty, and commitment in service.
According to the governor, the endorsement was not a personal decision alone but a unanimous agreement among party stakeholders present at the meeting. He added that Hamzat possesses the leadership qualities required to sustain and build on the progress recorded in Lagos State.
A video from the gathering, which has since gone viral, captured the moment Sanwo Olu lifted Hamzat’s hand in a symbolic gesture of support following prayers, drawing cheers from attendees.
Sanwo Olu also acknowledged the role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he described as a key figure in shaping the leadership trajectory within the state and the ruling party.
Hamzat’s declaration and the governor’s endorsement are expected to shape early political alignments within Lagos as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections.
