Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has confirmed that the country’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is alive following widespread strikes by Israel and the United States across Iranian territory on Saturday.
Speaking to NBC News from Tehran, Araghchi said that Khamenei was alive as far as he knew and that all high ranking officials remained safe. The remarks come amid heightened regional tensions after coordinated attacks targeted military and strategic facilities inside Iran.
The foreign minister said he had been in contact with Gulf states to clarify Tehran’s position. According to Araghchi, Iran has no intention of attacking neighboring countries and is acting in self defence by targeting American bases in the region. He emphasized that Iran’s military actions were directed specifically at United States installations and not at Gulf nations.
The strikes have triggered widespread concern about a broader regional conflict, with several countries calling for restraint and diplomatic engagement. Despite the escalation, Araghchi signaled that Tehran remains open to dialogue.
He noted that there is currently no direct communication with Washington but stated that if the Americans want to talk, they know how to reach him. He added that Iran is certainly interested in de escalation and reducing tensions.
The developments mark one of the most serious confrontations between Iran, Israel and the United States in recent years. Analysts warn that continued hostilities could further destabilize the Middle East and impact global security and energy markets as diplomatic efforts seek to prevent a wider conflict.
