Eagle Square and the Meaning of Belonging in Nigeria’s Democracy

The controversy surrounding Eagle Square reaches far beyond a simple dispute over venue access. It speaks to a deeper and more urgent question about belonging, public trust, and the true meaning of democracy in Nigeria. A democracy is not only measured by how votes are counted but also by how citizens experience ownership within their own republic.

Eagle Square is not the property of any political party. It is neither an APC space nor a PDP stronghold. It is a national symbol, built at the dawn of the Fourth Republic in 1999 to represent unity, shared identity, and collective civic life. Its purpose has always been national rather than partisan.

Over the years, the square has hosted presidential inaugurations, national celebrations, protests, and civic gatherings that cut across political divides. From moments of state authority to expressions of public dissent, it has stood as a visible reminder that power belongs ultimately to the people. Its history alone makes clear that it was never intended to be owned or controlled by any single political interest.

When public spaces begin to feel exclusive or restricted, the consequences go beyond logistics. Citizens start to perceive their place in the nation as conditional. This subtle shift can weaken democratic culture over time. Institutions that should unite begin to divide, and the sense of shared ownership slowly fades.

The real danger lies in precedent. Democracies are shaped not only by laws but by repeated actions. If national spaces are gradually treated as political assets, citizens may forget that these spaces were created for them.

Eagle Square represents more than land. It is a civic symbol that affirms Nigeria belongs to all its people, regardless of who holds power at any given moment.
