The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), scheduled for October 24, 2024, is set to be a decisive event that could significantly shape the party’s efforts to resolve ongoing internal crises and prepare for the 2027 general elections, according to the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT).
In a communiqué released by the Chairman of the PDP BoT, Senator Adolphus Wabara, after the 78th BoT meeting held at the national secretariat on Thursday, it was highlighted that urgent action is needed. He emphasized the need for all stakeholders to confront the pressing issues facing the party and begin strategizing for the future.
“The strength of our party lies in our ability to resolve internal conflicts; as we know, a house divided cannot stand, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that any issues or disputes within the party are addressed with diplomacy, sacrifice, patience, and an unwavering commitment to unity,” he stated.
Beyond the contentious debates, including the call for replacing the PDP’s acting national chairman, Ambassador Ilyas Damagum, and the power tussles in Rivers State, Senator Wabara expressed concern over the ongoing frictions between proxy interests within the party. He also noted that the recent ward, local government, and state congresses, intended to resolve leadership challenges, have instead become a source of deep concern due to alleged manipulations.
“The Board of Trustees has also received reports that in some states, these congresses were not conducted in full accordance with the guidelines of our great party; in some instances, the congresses did not even hold as scheduled,” Senator Wabara revealed.
The NEC meeting is expected to be a turning point for the PDP, as the party aims to address these internal crises and work towards building a unified and strong foundation ahead of the 2027 elections.
