A tragic shooting unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent office building in Midtown Manhattan, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including an off-duty New York City police officer and the gunman. The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Surveillance footage captured Tamura exiting a double-parked BMW near the building around 6:28 p.m., armed with an M4 rifle. He entered the lobby and immediately opened fire, fatally wounding Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old NYPD officer who was working security at the time. Tamura then shot a woman who sought cover behind a pillar and continued to fire at other individuals in the lobby. He proceeded to the 33rd floor, where he killed another person in a real estate management office before taking his own life.

The building, located near East 52nd Street, houses offices for several major organizations, including the National Football League (NFL), Blackstone, and KPMG. The attack prompted a swift response from law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, which is assisting in the investigation. Authorities have confirmed that Tamura acted alone, and there is no longer an active threat to the public.

Tamura had a documented mental health history, and his motives remain under investigation. Prior to the attack, he traveled across several states, including Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa, before arriving in New York City on the day of the shooting. In his vehicle, authorities found a rifle case, a revolver, magazines, ammunition, a backpack, and prescribed medication.

Among the victims was Didarul Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served as a police officer in New York City for three and a half years. He was married with two young children, and his wife was expecting their third child. The names of the other victims have not been released.

The incident has raised concerns about public safety and the prevalence of gun violence in urban areas. New York City had recently reported a significant reduction in gun violence prior to this attack. Mayor Eric Adams described the shooting as a “senseless act of violence” and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
