In his first Presidential Media Chat on Monday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu firmly rejected calls to reduce the size of his cabinet, highlighting the necessity of its current structure for effective governance in a nation as vast and populous as Nigeria.
Responding to suggestions to downsize, Tinubu underscored the challenges of managing a country with over 200 million citizens. “I’m not prepared to bring down the number of my cabinet. I saw the need for them when I created the portfolio. Nigeria is a large country. If you are to entertain over 200 million persons, calculate how many stewards will be required,” the President said.
Tinubu elaborated that efficiency and pragmatism guided the formation of his cabinet, which was designed to address the diverse and complex needs of the nation. He asserted that reducing its size would undermine the government’s ability to meet the expectations of its citizens effectively.
Tax Reform: A “New Dawn” for Nigeria
The President also addressed concerns surrounding his administration’s tax reforms, describing them as an essential step toward economic transformation. Labeling the reform “here to stay,” Tinubu argued that it is pivotal for Nigeria’s long-term prosperity and sustainable development.
Reflecting on his successful tenure as Governor of Lagos State, Tinubu shared, “I remember what I met, and I’m proud of what I left. It’s expanding today. We have to accommodate new thoughts in the economic calculation.”
The President assured Nigerians that the tax reform is designed to be “pro-poor,” focusing on widening the tax net to generate a larger pool of resources without disproportionately burdening the underprivileged.
Acknowledging criticisms and calls for broader consultation, Tinubu remained steadfast in his approach. “The hallmark of a leader is the ability to do what must be done. You have given me the mandate to govern, and I’m laser-focused on what Nigerians need. It will not be Eldorado for everybody, but the new dawn is here,” he said.
Commitment to Transformation
Tinubu’s remarks reaffirm his administration’s commitment to pursuing policies aimed at economic revitalization and inclusive governance. Despite facing criticism, the President emphasized the collective responsibility of Nigerians in contributing to the nation’s progress.
As the government moves forward, Tinubu’s stance signals a determination to prioritize long-term benefits over short-term appeasement, setting a bold tone for his leadership.
