Police Arrest 42 Suspected Illegal Miners Over Kwara Monarch Abduction

The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 42 suspected illegal miners in connection with the abduction of a traditional ruler in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, disclosed this during an interview on Monday, stating that the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation aimed at uncovering those behind the incident.

According to the police, the monarch was abducted on Saturday evening by armed men at his residence in the Olayinka community. Acting on intelligence, security operatives launched a coordinated operation using surveillance and other tactical resources, which led to the apprehension of the suspects.

Adekimi explained that all 42 individuals are currently in custody, but emphasized that investigations are still ongoing to determine their level of involvement and identify the actual perpetrators of the crime.

Efforts are also being intensified to secure the safe release of the abducted traditional ruler, as security agencies continue search operations across surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, described the incident as unfortunate and raised concerns about the security situation in the area. He assured residents that the local government is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the monarch’s safe return.

Yusuf noted that security personnel, alongside local vigilante groups, have expanded search efforts while calling on residents to provide useful information that could aid the investigation. He stressed that community cooperation remains essential in restoring peace and preventing further incidents.

The abduction has heightened anxiety among residents, prompting renewed calls for stronger and more sustained security measures to address rising insecurity in the region.
