The New Nigeria People’s Party has raised fresh concerns over the preparedness of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 general elections, accusing the commission of repeatedly disobeying court orders.

In a statement issued by its National Secretary, Oginni Olaposi Sunday, the party described the situation as disturbing, warning that such actions could undermine the credibility of the electoral process and disrupt the election timetable.

The party cited a recent judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory which directed INEC to update its records within 72 hours and recognise the Dr Agbo Major Gilbert led National Working Committee. According to the NNPP, the commission has yet to comply with the ruling weeks after it was delivered, despite being properly served.

The statement questioned the conduct of INEC under its leadership, noting that the commission is headed by a Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, yet has allegedly failed to uphold legal obligations. It stressed that all political parties must be given equal opportunity to prepare for the 2027 elections.

The NNPP revealed that it has initiated contempt proceedings against the commission and vowed to pursue the matter to the Supreme Court if necessary. It also called for urgent intervention from key stakeholders including the Attorney General of the Federation Lateef bemi, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Bar Association.

The party warned that failure to enforce court orders could weaken public trust in democratic institutions and damage the rule of law. It described the current situation as a serious threat to democracy and called for accountability within the electoral body.

It further advocated a comprehensive reform of INEC, particularly its legal department, to restore credibility and ensure transparency ahead of the 2027 polls. The NNPP added that adherence to the rule of law remains essential for sustaining democratic governance in Nigeria.
