Real Madrid will be without defender Alvaro Carreras for their crucial UEFA Champions League encounter against Manchester City on Wednesday, while star striker Kylian Mbappe remains doubtful after missing training with a knee injury.

The Spanish club confirmed on Monday that Carreras has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the calf of his right leg. The club did not provide details on how long the defender will be sidelined, but his absence adds to a growing list of injury concerns for the team ahead of the high profile European clash.

Mbappe, who is currently Real Madrid’s leading goalscorer, did not train with the squad as he continues to recover from a knee sprain that has troubled him since December. Reports suggest the France captain is unlikely to feature in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

The forward has already missed Real Madrid’s last three matches and recently traveled to Paris for medical tests and treatment on the injured knee. Spanish media reports indicate that Mbappe may be targeting a return for the second leg of the tie if his recovery progresses well.

Real Madrid manager will also have to cope with several other injury absences in the squad. Key players including Jude Bellingham, Eder Militao, Rodrygo Goes, Dani Ceballos and David Alaba are all currently recovering from injuries.

The potential absence of Mbappe is considered the biggest concern for the Spanish giants as they prepare to face the team managed by Pep Guardiola. His pace and goal scoring ability have been crucial for Real Madrid this season.

Despite the injury setbacks, Real Madrid will be hoping to deliver a strong performance at home as they look to gain an advantage against Manchester City in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Champions League knockout stage.
