The pan Yoruba socio political group Afenifere has called on Nigerian politicians to ensure that the 2027 general elections are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner, free from violence, thuggery, and character assassination.
The group made this known in a communiqué issued after its caucus meeting held at the Akure residence of its national leader, Reuben Fasoranti. The statement was signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi.
Afenifere stressed that political campaigns should be issue based and devoid of smear tactics, urging all political actors to uphold democratic values and promote unity during the electioneering period.
On the issue of insecurity, the group expressed deep concern over rising violence across the country, particularly in the South West region. It called on governors of the six South West states to take more decisive measures, including strengthening the Amotekun security outfit, improving surveillance systems, and accelerating efforts toward the elishment of state police.
The group also recommended enhanced collaboration with neighbouring states such as Kwara, Kogi, Edo, and Delta to effectively tackle cross border criminal activities, noting the shared cultural and demographic ties.
While acknowledging efforts by the Federal Government under Bola Tinubu, Afenifere commended the military and other security agencies for their ongoing operations. It also paid tribute to fallen solrs and extended condolences to their families, calling for increased support through better equipment, improved welfare, and a mix of kinetic and non kinetic strategies.
Afenifere further urged security agencies to investigate potential internal collaborators aiding criminal groups, pointing to confessions by suspects that suggest local complicity in acts of banditry and terrorism.
The group expressed sympathy for victims of violence nationwide and called for intensified efforts to restore peace and security. It reiterated its long standing position on restructuring, emphasizing that such reforms are essential for building a le and prosperous nation.
In addition, Afenifere announced plans for the centenary celebration of Pa Fasoranti, scheduled for May 11, 2026, inviting governors and prominent Nigerians to participate in the event.
