Tech Giants Collaborate on AI Ethics: New Guidelines Proposed

In recent developments, leading technology companies have taken significant steps toward establishing ethical guidelines for artificial intelligence (AI) development. In May 2024, major AI firms, including Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, xAI, and Zhipu AI, committed to new voluntary AI safety pledges announced by the UK and South Korean governments. These commitments involve publishing frameworks that outline how these companies will assess and mitigate risks associated with their AI models. The companies agreed not to develop or deploy models if severe risks cannot be adequately mitigated. This initiative builds upon the “Bletchley Declaration” from the UK’s 2023 AI Safety Summit, aiming to set global standards for safe AI development.

In July 2023, the White House secured voluntary commitments from seven leading AI companies—Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection AI, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI—to promote the safe, secure, and transparent development of AI technology. These companies pledged to share more information among themselves, governments, and researchers on managing AI risks, invest in cybersecurity, and test their AI systems through third parties before public release to identify and address potential issues promptly. They also committed to developing tools, such as “watermarking” mechanisms, to inform users when content is AI-generated and to prioritize research on societal risks posed by AI, including bias, discrimination, and privacy concerns.

Additionally, in February 2024, eight global tech companies—GSMA, INNIT, Lenovo Group, LG AI Research, Mastercard, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Telefonica—signed an agreement to integrate the values and principles of UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of AI when designing and deploying AI systems. This collaboration aims to build more ethical AI by adhering to internationally recognized ethical standards.

These initiatives reflect a growing recognition among tech giants of the need to address ethical considerations in AI development. By voluntarily adopting these guidelines, the companies aim to ensure that AI technologies are developed and deployed responsibly, with a focus on safety, transparency, and societal well-being.
