A major security scare unfolded in Washington D.C. on Saturday night after shots were fired during a high profile media gala attended by Donald Trump, forcing an emergency evacuation and triggering panic among guests.

The incident occurred at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where hundreds of journalists, officials, and guests had gathered. According to security sources, the suspect was detained at a screening area just outside the ballroom shortly after the disturbance began.

Trump was rushed off stage by security personnel as tactical teams moved in with weapons drawn. Guests reportedly took cover under tables while law enforcement secured the venue. Helicopters were also seen circling overhead as police flooded the area.

The United States Secret Service confirmed that one suspect is in custody and said the incident took place near the main security checkpoint. Officials described the response as swift and coordinated, preventing further escalation.

Trump later confirmed the situation on social media, praising security agencies for their rapid action and stating that all senior officials present, including the First Lady and Vice President, were safe. He also indicated plans to reschedule the event within a month.

The incident adds to a history of security concerns involving Trump, who survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler in 2024 and another armed threat later that year at a golf course in Florida.

The Washington Hilton, where the gala was held, is also historically significant as the site of the 1981 ing of former US President Ronald Reagan.

Organizers initially attempted to continue the event before ultimately postponing it due to safety concerns. The White House Correspondents’ Association said it would review security arrangements following the incident.

The gala, often known as “Nerd Prom,” traditionally brings together political leaders, journalists, and media executives, but this year’s edition was overshadowed by fear and uncertainty.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive behind the , and investigations are ongoing.
