As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, a wave of political defections is reshaping the landscape, with many key figures aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress in what analysts describe as a strategic move to secure the backing of Bola Tinubu.

Since early 2026, several governors, lawmakers, and influential politicians have defected from opposition parties to the APC, citing reasons ranging from ideological alignment to the need for stronger collaboration with the federal government. High profile defections from states like Kano, Adamawa, and Zamfara have significantly altered political calculations across regions.

Observers say the growing trend reflects the perceived importance of presidential endorsement in Nigerian politics. Tinubu’s influence, often described as decisive in party primaries and general elections, has made alignment with him a key objective for ambitious politicians seeking higher office.

The phenomenon has drawn comparisons to the “Baba Sope” style of politics associated with Tinubu’s tenure in Lagos, where political advancement is closely tied to endorsement by a powerful figure rather than solely personal popularity. This model appears to be expanding nationally as politicians position themselves within the president’s inner circle.

While the APC continues to welcome defectors, opposition parties including the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party have raised concerns. They allege that the ruling party is exploiting internal crises to weaken opposition structures and move toward a dominant party system.

Despite these accusations, the APC has denied any involvement, insisting that opposition parties should address their internal challenges.

Currently, the APC holds a commanding position with control of the presidency, a majority of governorships, and dominance in the National Assembly. Analysts warn that while this consolidation strengthens the party’s electoral machinery, it could also test the resilience of Nigeria’s multi party democracy.

Political experts note that the influx of defectors may create internal tensions within the APC, particularly over candidate selection and party loyalty. However, Tinubu’s influence is widely seen as a unifying force capable of managing competing ambitions.

As 2027 draws c, more defections and alliances are expected, with political actors prioritizing proximity to power as a pathway to electoral success.
