Former three time champion Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the upcoming Madrid Open as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury.
The 24 time Grand Slam winner announced his decision on Friday via Instagram, stating that he needs more time to regain full fitness. “Madrid, unfortunately I will not be able to compete this year. I am continuing my recovery in order to be back soon,” Djokovic said, expressing hope of returning to action in the near future.
The Serbian star, currently ranked world number four, has had a limited schedule this season. He has not competed since his fourth round exit at the Indian Wells, where he lost to British player Jack Dr over a month ago.
Earlier in the year, Djokovic was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Australian Open, a result that sparked speculation about his future in the sport as he hinted that retirement could be approaching.
He also withdrew from the Doha Open due to fatigue and subsequently skipped other major tournaments including Miami and Monte Carlo Masters events because of the ongoing shoulder issue. So far, Djokovic has featured in only two tournaments this year.
His withdrawal from Madrid raises fresh concerns about his readiness for the next Grand Slam, the French Open, set to begin in Paris in about a month.
With time running short, Djokovic’s recovery will be closely monitored as fans await his return to top level competition.
