Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Housing, Muttaqha Darma, has pledged to tackle the country’s estimated 20 million housing deficit through the delivery of affordable homes across the nation.

Speaking in Abuja while officially assuming office, Darma reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing the housing and urban development goals under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Tinubu. He outlined plans to accelerate housing delivery through collaboration, innovation, and efficient policy implementation.

Describing his leadership approach as inclusive and team driven, the minister emphasized the importance of cooperation within the ministry. “We are all team players. I see myself as a captain, not a boss. The President is the coach who has already given us direction, and we are determined to succeed,” he said.

Darma assured staff of an open door policy, encouraging contributions from all levels to drive progress. He also revealed plans to meet with departmental directors to conduct a comprehensive review of existing strategies and operations within the ministry.

The minister expressed appreciation to his predecessor for laying a solid foundation and pledged continuity in key projects. He specifically highlighted the ongoing 10,000 housing units initiative, assuring that it would be sustained and expanded to meet growing demand.

Also speaking, Minister of State for Housing Yusuf Ata pointed to achievements already recorded, particularly through public private partnerships that have driven infrastructure and housing development nationwide.

According to Ata, the Renewed Housing Programme has been implemented in over 17 states, delivering large scale projects in major locations including the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos, and Kano. These efforts have generated more than 300,000 direct and indirect jobs across the construction sector.

Stakeholders believe the renewed push will not only address Nigeria’s housing shortage but also stimulate economic growth and job creation, positioning the housing sector as a key driver of national development.
