The Lagos Waste Management Authority has intensified its enforcement operations in Alimosho Local Government Area and adjoining Local Council Development Areas, leading to the arrest of two suspects and the sealing of multiple properties for environmental violations.
The operation, carried out by the Project WISE West enforcement team, focused on curbing indiscriminate waste disposal, illegal dumping, and other activities contributing to environmental degradation, particularly around the Ikotun axis and nearby communities.
During a night surveillance exercise, officials apprehended a 15 year old boy, Chukwudi Opara, for illegally dumping refuse at the Ikotun Egbe roundabout around 10 pm. He was subsequently handed over to the task force office in Oshodi for further action.
In a related development, a car lot located at Iroko Estate along LASU Isheri Road was sealed for discharging waste into drainage channels. A furniture showroom was also shut down for similar environmental offences. Additionally, an intention to seal notice was issued to a mini store at Diamond Estate for failing to engage a registered Private Sector Participant operator as required by law.
The enforcement action followed complaints from residents of Kaslat and Sarumi Street over the use of an undeveloped plot as an illegal dumpsite. Waste was reportedly being burned on the site. Authorities sealed the property and arrested a 65 year old security guard, Abubakar Yunusa, for alleged involvement.
Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and protecting public health. He warned that offenders would be prosecuted and urged residents to adopt proper waste disposal practices.
