Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez has been named in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year for the 2025 to 2026 season following an outstanding debut campaign with Rangers FC.

The 24 year old centre back enjoyed a breakthrough season after joining Rangers in the summer, overcoming an early adjustment period to become a key figure in the club’s defensive setup. His consistency, composure on the ball, and ability to contribute to build up play earned him widespread recognition in Scottish football.

Fernandez also impressed offensively, scoring six goals in 28 appearances across all competitions. His aerial strength and threat from set pieces added another dimension to his game, making him one of the standout defenders in the league.

The Team of the Year selection is voted for by fellow professional players, highlighting the respect Fernandez has earned from opponents across the league. He is joined in defence by players including Paul McGinn, Craig Halkett, and Harry Milne, with Calum Ward named as goalkeeper.

Since arriving from Peterborough United for a reported fee of 2.9 million euros, Fernandez has elished himself as a regular starter at Ibrox Stadium, becoming a key part of Rangers’ defensive ility.

His performances have also translated to the international stage with the Nigeria national football team. He earned his first call up during the March international window, marking his debut with a goal against Jordan after earlier featuring in a win over Iran.

Fernandez’s rapid rise from club newcomer to international scorer and league standout has made him one of the most promising Nigerian defenders in European football this season.
