Ovation publisher and political figure Dele Momodu has called on Nigerian youths to take a more active role in the country’s electoral process ahead of the next general elections, warning that politics in Nigeria requires more than theoretical discussions.

Speaking at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State during a reading event organised as part of the institution’s Library Week, Momodu encouraged young people to move from analysis to practical political participation.

He said electoral politics in Nigeria, particularly the presidential race, is highly competitive and often intense, stressing that it involves significant mobilisation and contestation among political actors.

According to him, his personal experience in politics, including his 2011 presidential ambition, exposed him to the realities of political competition and the level of commitment required to participate meaningfully.

Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, noted that while he has worked closely with several political leaders in the past, including President Bola Tinubu, he has chosen a path guided by contentment rather than financial motivation.

He explained that his upbringing and education at Obafemi Awolowo University shaped his values, particularly his belief in integrity and contentment, which influenced his political choices over the years.

The media entrepreneur stated that if financial gain were his motivation, he would have aligned differently politically, but insisted that his decisions have been guided by principle rather than personal enrichment.

During the event, he also reflected on his student days at the university, crediting the institution and his parents for instilling discipline and a strong educational foundation.

The OAU Library leadership, represented by Dr Adebimpe Fadehan, said the Reading Time initiative is designed to promote literacy, academic engagement, and a deeper appreciation of knowledge among students and staff.

She added that the programme forms an important part of the university’s broader effort to encourage intellectual development and a strong reading culture within the academic community.

Meanwhile, political uncertainty continues to surround preparations for the 2027 general elections, as some major parties face internal leadership disputes that may affect candidate selection and participation.
