The South West caucus of the African Democratic Congress has expressed serious concerns over the alleged actions of its National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, warning that they are hindering the party’s coordination and growth in the region ahead of the 2027 elections.
The concerns emerged following a review of the party’s recent national convention held in Abuja, with regional leaders stating that the issues go beyond the event and point to deeper challenges affecting unity and preparedness in the South West, a key political zone.
In a statement issued by Dr Babatunde Oke on behalf of the South West leadership led by Honourable Rahman Owokoniran, the caucus emphasized the importance of unity, cooperation, and internal discipline. However, it identified what it described as a major internal problem linked to Aregbesola’s conduct.
According to the caucus, multiple complaints have been sent to the party’s national headquarters regarding actions that have negatively impacted membership registration, party expansion, and overall coordination in the region. The group described the South West’s turnout at the convention as disappointing and unrepresentative of its political significance.
The caucus also questioned Aregbesola’s alignment with the party’s goals, calling on him to clarify his position and commitment. It warned that alleged actions perceived as disruptive could undermine the party’s credibility and chances in future elections.
Further concerns were raised over reported cases of duplicate state congresses and the emergence of parallel party structures in the region, which the caucus described as avoidable and damaging to party unity.
The South West leadership called on the national chairman, David Mark, to intervene and address the situation promptly to prevent further escalation. It stressed that internal conflicts, if left unresolved, could weaken the party’s position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the party, the caucus urged all stakeholders to avoid actions capable of creating division, insisting that the focus should remain on building a cohesive and credible political platform.
