A former House of Representatives member and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barrister Sani Mohammad Takori, has urged the party to participate in the upcoming local government elections in Zamfara State. In a statement issued to the press in Gusau, Takori cautioned that any decision by the APC to boycott the election would be a “political suicide.”

Takori expressed concern over growing speculation that the APC might not take part in the local government polls, even though no official announcement has been made. He emphasized that avoiding participation in the election could be detrimental not only to the party but also to its members and supporters, particularly those who have experienced both the victories and defeats of the 2023 elections.

“We need to send words of caution that any attempt to boycott the election is a political suicide, not only to the party, but all members of the party including those who benefit from the fortune and misfortune of 2023 victory and defeat,” Takori stated, urging the party leadership to reconsider any such move.

Addressing concerns that the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) might manipulate the election results, Takori argued that this fear should not be a reason to withdraw from the electoral process. He pointed out that election manipulation is not new in Zamfara State and has historical roots since the beginning of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. According to him, the only genuinely free and fair local elections in the state occurred in 1999.

Despite these challenges, Takori highlighted that Zamfara State is now equipped with strong opposition leaders capable of changing the political landscape, as has been witnessed in other states. He believes that with the right leadership and strategy, the APC can counter any manipulation attempts and achieve success in the polls.

Takori’s call reflects the importance of political participation and engagement in maintaining a vibrant democracy. He urges the APC to remain vigilant, proactive, and committed to contesting the elections to ensure that their influence and relevance in the state’s political scene are sustained.

As the local government polls approach, Takori’s appeal serves as a reminder that active involvement and resilience are crucial for the party’s growth and the development of a healthy democratic system in Zamfara State.
