Vice President Kashim Shettima has stressed the urgent need to prioritize the education of the younger generation, cautioning that every child left on the streets becomes a liability that the nation will eventually bear the consequences of. He highlighted the critical importance of girl child education in Nigeria, advocating for a collaborative, multisectoral approach to tackle gender-based barriers hindering access to quality education.
Shettima made these remarks during the International Conference on Girl Child Education in Nigeria, which took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday. Represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, Shettima emphasized that out-of-school children not only threaten their own futures but also pose a significant risk to their peers and society at large. He underscored the pressing need for creative and innovative solutions to address this growing issue.
The Vice President also highlighted the pivotal role that education plays in stabilizing Nigeria’s economic and social order, especially for girls. He noted that education is not merely a moral obligation; it is a stabilizing force essential for maintaining the nation’s social and economic balance.
