Edo PDP Boycotts Peace Accord Over Arrest of Party Members

In the lead-up to the September 21, 2024, Edo State governorship election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has opted out of signing a peace accord intended to ensure a peaceful election. The event, held in Benin City on September 12, saw the presence of PDP State Chairman Tony Aziegbemi and the party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who chose not to sign the agreement.

Aziegbemi stated that their refusal was in protest of the arrest of 10 PDP members by the police in Abuja, arguing that the party could not commit to the peace accord while its members were detained without trial. He also expressed concerns over perceived bias from the police, claiming it could affect the election’s fairness.

Despite the PDP’s stance, 17 other political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party, signed the peace deal, which was facilitated by the National Peace Committee. The peace accord is seen as crucial for ensuring a non-violent and orderly election.
