Turkish giants Galatasaray have sparked fresh controversy in the Turkish Süper Lig after launching a fierce public on match officials following their 3–0 derby victory over rivals Fenerbahçe.
The heated Istanbul derby, one of the most intense fixtures in European football, saw Galatasaray already leading 1–0 at halftime before extending their dominance in the second half to secure a commanding win that strengthened their position in the title race.
On social media platform X, Galatasaray accused referees of bias and alleged misconduct during the match, claiming they were denied two penalty decisions. The club’s statement included strongly worded accusations, describing officiating influence in highly emotional terms and insisting that they were aware of what they called unfair treatment during the game.
Despite the controversy, Galatasaray went on to seal a decisive victory with goals from Victor Osimhen, Barış Alper Yılmaz, and Lucas Torreira, moving them seven points clear of Fenerbahçe with only a few matches remaining in the season.
Fenerbahçe’s frustration was further heightened after missing a penalty in the first half and later being reduced to ten men following a red card issued to goalkeeper Ederson.
The latest incident adds to a growing list of refereeing controversies in Turkish football, where officiating decisions have frequently triggered strong reactions from clubs, managers, and fans. The league has also faced disciplinary and integrity challenges in recent years, including suspensions of referees over alleged betting involvement and repeated disputes over match decisions.
High profile figures have previously weighed in on officiating concerns, and tensions escalated further after incidents involving club officials and criticism of referees in both domestic and international competitions.
Galatasaray president Dursun Özbek has also previously announced strained relations with the leadership of the Turkish Football Federation, reflecting ongoing institutional tension between clubs and football authorities.
With the title race approaching its final stages, the latest outburst is expected to intensify scrutiny of refereeing standards in Turkish football and deepen rivalries between the country’s biggest clubs.
