Pep Guardiola has admitted that a defeat for Manchester City against Arsenal on Sunday could effectively end their hopes of winning the Premier League title this season.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Guardiola acknowledged the significance of the match but insisted there would still be work to do even if his side secures victory. Arsenal, managed by Mikel Arteta, currently sit six points clear at the top of the table, although City have a game in hand and the advantage of playing at home.

A win for City against Arsenal, followed by another victory over Burnley, could see them climb to the top of the standings for the first time in months. Despite this possibility, Guardiola cautioned that the title race remains complex, with several challenging fixtures still ahead.

“If we lose, it is over,” Guardiola said, underlining the stakes. “But there are still many games to play, and anything can happen.”

Arsenal’s recent form has raised questions about their ability to sustain their title push. The Gunners have managed just one win in their last five matches across all competitions, a dip that began after their League Cup final defeat to City. However, they remain strong contenders and recently reached the Champions League semi finals after overcoming Sporting Lisbon.

City, meanwhile, have benefited from a full week of preparation, giving them a potential edge going into the clash. Striker Erling Haaland described the match as “like a final,” emphasizing its importance in determining the destination of the title.

Guardiola also urged his players to remain focused and not be overwhelmed by the occasion, stressing that discipline and performance will be key against a side he described as the best in England so far this season.

With only a handful of matches remaining, Sunday’s showdown could prove decisive in shaping the outcome of an intense title race.
