The Ghana Football Association has appointed experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In an official statement released on Monday, the association confirmed that the decision was made by its Executive Council in collaboration with key stakeholders. Queiroz is expected to immediately take charge as Ghana intensifies preparations for the global tournament, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The 73 year old coach brings a wealth of experience, having managed at four FIFA World Cup tournaments. His résumé includes leading South Africa to qualification for the 2002 edition, guiding Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and coaching Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments.

Over the course of his World Cup career, Queiroz has overseen 13 matches, recording three wins, four draws and six defeats. He has also held coaching roles with top sides and national teams, including Real Madrid and Manchester United, further underlining his global pedigree.

The appointment follows the departure of former coach Otto Addo, who left the role after a disappointing run of results. The Black Stars had suffered multiple defeats and failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, prompting a ce in leadership.

Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, 2026 in Toronto, before facing strong opponents including England and Croatia in what promises to be a competitive group stage.

With Queiroz now at the helm, expectations are high that his experience and tactical discipline will help revitalise the Black Stars and improve their chances on football’s biggest stage.
