Bundesliga club Wolfsburg have announced the dismissal of head coach Daniel Bauer following the team poor run of results that has left the club struggling near the bottom of the league table.

The decision was confirmed on Sunday after Wolfsburg suffered a disappointing two goals to one home defeat against Hamburger SV on Saturday. The loss added further pressure on the club which is currently battling to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga.

Bauer initially took charge of the team on an interim basis after the club parted ways with former manager Paul Simonis in November. At the beginning of his tenure Bauer showed promise by winning three of his first seven matches in charge. However the team form quickly declined with Wolfsburg managing only two points from their last eight games.

The poor results have pushed the club deeper into the relegation battle and raised serious concerns among fans and club officials about their chances of remaining in the top flight.

Reports in German media indicate that experienced manager ter Hecking could return to lead the club. Hecking previously enjoyed success with Wolfsburg and guided the team to victory in the DFB Pokal in 2015 while also finishing second in the Bundesliga during his time in charge.

VfL Wolfsburg which is owned by Volkswagen has never been relegated since earning promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in 1997. The club now faces one of the most difficult moments in its history as it fights to avoid dropping to the lower division.

Wolfsburg currently sit two points behind Werder Bremen who occupy the relegation playoff position. With only a few matches left in the season the club must quickly regain form to secure its place in German top flight football.
