Chinese startup DeepSeek has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, DeepSeek V4, marking its first major release in over a year and reigniting global competition in the AI space. Here are five important insights about the fast rising company.

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng in zhou as an off of a hedge fund focused on data driven strategies. It gained international attention in early 2025 with its R1 reasoning model, which rivaled systems like ChatGPT. The model’s performance and reportedly low development cost shocked the tech industry, prompting investor Marc Andreessen to call it a “Sputnik moment,” referencing the historic Sputnik launch.

However, concerns persist over censorship. Like many Chinese AI platforms, DeepSeek avoids politically sensitive topics such as the Tiananmen Square crackdown. This has contributed to restrictions on its use in countries including the United States, Australia, and South Korea, particularly on government devices.

A major differentiator is DeepSeek’s commitment to open source development. Unlike proprietary systems from companies like OpenAI, its models allow developers to inspect and modify their architecture. This approach aligns with other Chinese firms such as Alibaba, and has been praised by officials including Lou Qinjian as a driver of innovation.

DeepSeek’s rise has energized China’s tech ecosystem, boosting startups like Zhipu AI and MiniMax, while also lifting chipmakers such as MetaX.

Still, controversy surrounds its development. Reports suggest the company may have bypassed US export restrictions on advanced chips from Nvidia, though no concrete evidence has been confirmed.
