Vybz Kartel Crowned ‘King of Dancehall’ at Reggae Sumfest 2025

Vybz Kartel, the renowned Jamaican dancehall artist, was officially crowned the “King of Dancehall” the 32nd staging of in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The coronation took on 18, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Kartel’s illustrious career. The ceremony was a highlight of the festival’s opening night at the Catherine Hall Complex, where Kartel delivered a high- performance that captivated the audience.

The announcement of Kartel’s crowning was made by Joe Bogdanovich, CEO of Downsound Entertainment, during the festival’s media launch in May 2025. Bogdanovich referred to Kartel as the “current dancehall king,” signaling the forthcoming official coronation. This move followed between Kartel and Bogdanovich, with Kartel publicly accepting the previously by Beenie since 2009.

Kartel’s return to the stage was highly anticipated, especially after his from prison in July 2024, when his conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeal. His performance at Reggae Sumfest 2025 marked his appearance at the festival since 2011. The event featured a -studded lineup, including international R&B legend Toni Braxton, and local acts such as Masicka, Tarrus Riley, Protoje, Lila Iké, Tommy Lee Sparta, and Skeng.

The coronation ceremony was a symbolic and moment, with Spice, the Queen of Dancehall, placing the crown on Kartel’s head. This gesture underscored the unity and respect within the dancehall community. Kartel’s performance included favorites like “Fever,” “Romping Shop” (with Spice), “MoBay Anthem,” “My Scheme,” “Send Fi Mi ,” “Dollar Sign,” “Bike Back,” “ Gallis,” “Love Dem,” and his latest hit “God Is the Greatest,” which his set in fitting fashion.
