A harrowing tragedy unfolded in the Ita Eku area of Igirigiri, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, where a couple met their untimely deaths in a violent machete fight on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. Their lifeless bodies, drenched in blood, were discovered at their residence, where they lived with their four children. One of their sons, approximately 13 years old, has since provided a chilling account of the events leading to the gruesome incident, shedding light on a night that began with familial harmony but ended in catastrophe.
The deceased husband, identified as Caleb, a policeman, and his wife were known to have a tumultuous relationship, with sources reporting frequent accusations of infidelity leveled by the wife against her husband. These tensions reportedly culminated in the deadly altercation, as evidenced by the deep machete wounds found on both bodies. However, the couple’s son, in a viral Instagram video shared by Daodu Sammy Gbenga on Thursday, painted a different picture of the hours before the tragedy, revealing no overt signs of discord.
Speaking in the video, dressed in white underwear and blue jeans, the boy recounted how his father had hinted at sharing personal struggles with him but appeared fearful whenever his mother was present. “Before my daddy died, he said he would tell me his story. But whenever my mum came home, he became afraid. I asked him why, but he never gave an answer,” the boy said. He described the evening of the incident as unusually peaceful. His father returned home around 9 p.m., opting not to eat until his wife arrived. When she did, the couple engaged in playful banter, laughing and storytelling with their children. “They were talking, laughing, and even telling us stories,” the boy recalled. The family concluded the night with prayers led by Caleb, who held his Bible, before retiring to bed.
The illusion of calm shattered in the early hours when the boy awoke to the sound of a cutlass clashing. “I started hearing the sound of a cutlass,” he said. Alarmed, he roused his sister, and they attempted to enter their parents’ room, only to find the door locked. His sister grabbed a stone to break it down, but it held firm as their parents’ screams echoed inside. Desperate, the siblings sought help from neighbors. “We ran to the next house to get help from the boys living there,” he explained. By the time they returned with assistance, an eerie silence had descended. The neighbors forced the door open, revealing a grisly scene: both parents lay dead in a pool of blood.
A resident speculated on the nature of the fight, suggesting, “It seemed as if the woman cut off the man’s private part, and in retaliation, he inflicted a fatal wound on her.” While the exact sequence remains unclear, the severity of the injuries points to a fierce struggle. The boy confirmed that neighbors rushed his parents to the hospital, though it was too late to save them.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation is underway to unravel the circumstances of this double fatality. The tragedy has left the community reeling, with related news of local unrest—like a robber’s escape from custody in Ekiti—adding to the region’s woes. For the couple’s children, now orphaned, the memory of a night that transitioned from laughter and prayer to bloodshed will linger, a stark reminder of how quickly domestic tensions can turn deadly.
