In recent months, the Sahel region has witnessed a significant escalation in jihadist activities, particularly by Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda affiliate. This in violence has raised about the emergence of a West caliphate.

JNIM militants launched a coordinated assault on the Malian base in Boulikessi, near the Burkina Faso border. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 60 soldiers and the wounding of 40 others. The Malian army confirmed the incident but did not provide specific casualty , stating that soldiers fought “to their last breath.” This assault is part of a broader campaign by JNIM, which has intensified its operations across , Burkina Faso, and Niger, leading to over 400 troop fatalities in May and alone.
