A tragic incident unfolded at London Southend Airport when a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in a massive fireball and prompting the airport’s closure until further notice.
The aircraft involved was a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, a twin-engine turboprop commonly used for medical transport. Operated by Zeusch Aviation, based in Lelystad, Netherlands, the plane had arrived at Southend Airport from Pula, Croatia, earlier that day. It was scheduled to return to Lelystad in the evening. Eyewitnesses reported that the plane took off and, within seconds, began to bank heavily to the left before crashing headfirst into the ground, creating a significant fireball.
Images shared on social media depicted thick black smoke and flames emanating from the crash site, visible from various points around the airport. Witnesses described the scene as a “big fireball,” with one individual noting the aircraft’s steep bank angle shortly after takeoff.
In response to the incident, Essex Police and emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene. The police cordoned off the area and advised the public to avoid the vicinity to allow for the ongoing investigation and recovery efforts. The airport announced its closure, with all flights to and from Southend Airport canceled until further notice. Passengers scheduled to travel were advised to contact their respective airlines for alternative arrangements.
Zeusch Aviation confirmed that its flight SUZ1 was involved in the accident and expressed support for the authorities’ investigation. The company stated, “Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected.”
