The Police Command in Ondo State has confirmed the arrest of 32 suspects linked to a communal clash that resulted in the tragic loss of two lives in the Iwaro area of Akoko South-East Local Government on Sunday. CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, the Command’s spokesperson, made this announcement on Tuesday in Akure.
Odunlami stated, “Yes, 32 suspects have been arrested in connection with the communal clash that occurred in the Akoko area on Sunday. All the suspects are in our custody and investigation is ongoing to unravel the causes of the clash.”
The conflict, which erupted on January 12, 2025, involved youths from the Oka Odo, Ebo, and Owake communities. It began when Oka Odo youths, on a hunting expedition, were mistakenly attacked by Ebo youths due to an ongoing land dispute with Owake. This misunderstanding escalated into violence when Oka Odo youths retaliated by invading Ebo, leading to arson and further clashes.
The aftermath saw two fatalities, with the identities of the deceased still unknown, and numerous injuries, with the injured receiving medical attention. Additionally, several houses were destroyed in the conflict.
Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, addressed the incident on Monday, urging for peace among the affected communities to prevent further escalation of violence.
This incident adds to the series of communal clashes in the region, highlighting the ongoing tensions over land and territorial rights in Akoko. The police’s swift action in arresting the suspects is aimed at restoring order and ensuring a thorough investigation into the causes and culprits of this violent episode.
