In a move that marks the beginning of a new era for the historic Oyo Kingdom, Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade, recently appointed as the new Alaafin of Oyo by Governor Seyi Makinde, is reportedly set to receive his certificate of office today. This significant step is part of the ceremonial transition of power within the revered Alaafin throne.
A palace source, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Prince Owoade has been in Ibadan and is expected to return to Oyo town shortly after the certificate presentation. The source described the event as “impromptu and low-key,” suggesting that the urgency is driven by the need to expedite preparations for the official coronation of the Alaafin-elect.
“Prince Owoade has been in Ibadan since yesterday. We anticipate he will be presented the certificate of office today Insha Allah,” the source stated. He further added, “Though we never expected it would be urgent like this, I think it’s done in preparation for the official coronation.”
The presentation of the certificate of office is a critical formality in the traditional governance structure of Oyo, symbolizing official recognition and the conferment of authority to lead. This act not only signifies the acceptance of Prince Owoade by the state but also sets the stage for a series of traditional rites and festivities that accompany the coronation of a new Alaafin.
The swift action by Governor Seyi Makinde and the palace to present the certificate underscores the importance of maintaining continuity and stability in the leadership of the Oyo Kingdom. This transition comes after a period of vacancy on the throne, following the death of the previous Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, in April 2022.
As Prince Owoade prepares to receive this significant document, the anticipation builds not only for his official coronation but also for the future under his reign, where he is expected to blend tradition with modern governance principles, aiming for the prosperity and cultural enrichment of the Oyo Kingdom.
