The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of Alhaji Suleiman Ganiu Aremu, popularly known as Barryshine, a notorious drug baron wanted for his involvement in several high-profile drug trafficking cases. Barryshine was apprehended two years after coming under the agency’s radar for his alleged role in four failed attempts to export cocaine to Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The illicit operations were intercepted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, between 2022 and 2024.
Barryshine, whose name has been associated with large-scale drug trafficking networks, has long been on the NDLEA’s most-wanted list. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the agency’s ongoing efforts to dismantle drug smuggling syndicates operating across Nigeria and internationally. According to NDLEA, Barryshine was the mastermind behind the multiple failed attempts to smuggle substantial quantities of cocaine out of the country through the Lagos airport, intended for markets in the Middle East.
NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the arrest in a statement, expressing satisfaction with the agency’s persistence in tracking down high-level traffickers like Barryshine. He highlighted that the drug baron had been elusive for years, operating behind the scenes while his operatives handled the physical export of drugs. The NDLEA believes his arrest will cripple a major arm of the cocaine trafficking network in Nigeria and discourage other barons from continuing such operations.
The successful capture of Barryshine underscores the NDLEA’s commitment to intensifying its war on drug trafficking, particularly in critical international airports, which have been key transit points for illegal drugs. As investigations continue, the agency is expected to make more arrests and unearth further details of Barryshine’s extensive drug operations. His apprehension is seen as a major victory in the fight against drug cartels in Nigeria.
I think its ridiculous that Barryshine was arrested for selling drugs. Let people do what they want with their bodies!
I dont think drug lords like Barryshine should be arrested. Let them do their thing, its the circle of life.
I think Barryshines arrest is just a distraction from bigger drug lords operating freely. NDLEA should focus on the real kingpins.
I dont get why they waste resources on small-time drug dealers when bigger issues need attention. priorities, people!
I dont think Barryshine deserves all this attention. Lets focus on the real issues instead of glorifying criminals.
I dont believe in long manhunts for drug dealers. Lets focus on prevention and rehabilitation instead of glorifying these criminals.
I dont get why some people are celebrating this arrest. Maybe Barryshine was just a small fish in a big pond.
I personally think drug lords like Barryshine should be given a chance to reform instead of being immediately thrown in jail.
Why waste resources hunting down small-time drug dealers? Focus on bigger threats to society instead. Barryshine is just a scapegoat.
I think Barryshines arrest is a distraction. The focus should be on rehabilitating drug addicts, not just catching dealers.
I think Barryshines arrest is just the tip of the iceberg. There are bigger fish out there. NDLEA needs to step up their game!
NDLEA should focus on all drug offenders, not just high-profile cases. Justice for all.
I cant believe they only caught Barryshine now. NDLEAs inefficiency is mind-blowing. This should have happened ages ago.
I dont agree with celebrating arrests like this. We need to focus on prevention and rehabilitation, not just punishment.
Celebrating arrests can be a deterrent and hold criminals accountable. Prevention and rehabilitation are important too.
I think we should legalize all drugs to eliminate the need for drug barons. Prohibition clearly isnt working. Lets think outside the box.
I think maybe Barryshine was just a small fish in a big pond. What about going after the real big players? 🤔
Barryshine may be small, but every fish matters. Lets hold all players accountable.
I dont think drug dealers like Barryshine should be demonized. Maybe he had no other options. Lets consider rehabilitation instead.
