Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has emphasized the importance of maintaining a multi-party political system in Nigeria, cautioning against the country becoming a one-party state. He made these remarks at the Fashola Agribusiness Hub in Oyo town during a weekend interaction with members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Press Corps, who were there for their annual retreat.
Addressing rumors about a possible presidential ambition for 2027, Makinde clarified that he would not be influenced by speculation or outside pressure. “If I want to do something, I will come out and say, this is what I want to do. No speculation. Nobody can push my agenda. I will push my agenda when the time comes,” Makinde stated, emphasizing his autonomy in decision-making.
Makinde reflected on his election as governor in 2019, expressing gratitude for the opportunity given to him by the people of Oyo State. He saw it as a chance to change the state’s governance narrative and has focused on leaving a lasting impact. As part of this effort, he highlighted the resuscitation of the Fashola Agribusiness Hub, originally conceptualized in the 1950s by the Western Region government, and the launch of new road projects to connect different zones within the state.
The governor reiterated the need for Nigeria to avoid becoming a one-party state. He urged people to reflect on the significance of this, stating, “Oyo people took a decision. In 2019, we did not have a godfather. Nobody sponsored me. Nobody gave a dime for us to get in there. But the people of Oyo State decided that they wanted to give this opportunity to an outsider.”
Makinde recounted the skepticism he faced before his election, as some questioned his qualifications and political experience. He noted that he had previously run for the Senate twice without success. Despite lacking formal political experience, he emphasized his accomplishments in business as a testament to his capability.
Makinde recalled the political landscape before his election, with the entire Southwest region controlled by the All Progressives Congress (APC). “But Oyo State said, no, we dare to be different,” he said, noting the state’s bold choice to support his candidacy.
To gain the trust of the people, Makinde and his team developed a document titled Roadmap to Accelerate Development of Oyo State 2019 to 2023, outlining his plans for the state. He asked the public to hold him accountable to the promises in the document.
Reflecting on the talent and intellect present in Nigeria, Makinde urged citizens not to allow the nation to slip into a one-party system. He emphasized the importance of diversity in governance, stating, “Let’s not slide into a one-party state, so that we can give others the opportunity, so you can showcase what is possible in Nigeria.”
