A woman who was shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on Wednesday morning has died, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The incident has sparked protests and drawn heavy law enforcement presence to Minneapolis’ Central neighborhood.
In a statement, Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said ICE agents were blocked by a vehicle during an operation and alleged that those involved attempted to run over federal officers. She described the incident as “an act of domestic terrorism,” adding that an ICE officer opened fire in response. No ICE agents were reported to have suffered serious injuries.
The shooting occurred near the intersection of Portland Avenue and 34th Street, where a large crowd of protesters and law enforcement officers later gathered. Reporters at the scene observed the area cordoned off, with numerous ICE agents positioned around the intersection. Aerial footage showed an SUV believed to be carrying federal agents deploying chemical irritants while attempting to leave the area through an alley.
City officials and Minneapolis Police Department officers were also seen at the scene as authorities worked to manage the growing crowd and secure the area. Minneapolis City Council Vice President Jamal Osman confirmed that the woman who was shot was a civilian and was inside a vehicle at the time of the incident. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said his administration was being briefed on developments.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey sharply criticized ICE’s presence, accusing federal agents of creating “chaos” and calling for them to leave the city immediately. “We stand rock solid with our immigrant and refugee communities,” the mayor said.
U.S. Senator Tina Smith echoed those concerns, urging ICE to leave Minnesota “for everyone’s safety.”
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office said it was not directly involved in the incident but is providing support to investigators. Meanwhile, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty stated that her office is pressing for a thorough review by state and local authorities, emphasizing the need for a transparent investigation into the fatal shooting.
