Vitesse Arnhem regains spot in Dutch professional league

Vitesse Arnhem, one of the oldest football clubs in the Netherlands, has regained its position in the professional league following a successful appeal against the Dutch Football Association’s (KNVB) decision to revoke its professional license. On September 3, 2025, the Court of Arnhem-Leeuwarden overturned the KNVB’s ruling, citing procedural mistakes and time constraints in their initial actions.

This decision is a notable turnaround for Vitesse, which experienced severe financial difficulties that led to its relegation from the Eredivisie in April 2024. The KNVB had imposed an unprecedented 18-point deduction for repeated violations of licensing regulations and providing misleading information to authorities, which relegated the club to the bottom of the league, ending its 35-year streak in top-flight football.

In response to their demotion, Vitesse launched a crowdfunding campaign in May 2024 to secure funds necessary for retaining their license. The initiative received widespread support from fans and former players, raising over €1 million. Despite this effort, the KNVB revoked Vitesse’s professional license in July 2025, pointing to unresolved financial issues, leading to protests and deep concern within the community regarding the club’s future.
