The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has admitted a total of 15,077 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, marking the highest student intake in the history of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, SAN, disclosed this on Thursday during the university’s matriculation ceremony held in Benin City. He described the occasion as historic, noting that many of the newly admitted students were pioneers of about 20 newly introduced courses and academic programmes.

“At this ceremony, a total of 15,077 students are being admitted formally into the various Faculties, Schools, Centres and Programmes,” Omoregie announced.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed that the admissions were based strictly on merit and urged the students to make excellence their guiding principle throughout their academic journey. He described UNIBEN as a first-generation university and one of the most sought-after institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a strong legacy of academic excellence spanning over 55 years.

According to him, the university has consistently distinguished itself in quality teaching, learning, impactful research and meaningful community engagement, values embod in its motto, “Knowledge for Service.”

Omoregie reiterated the institution’s commitment to producing graduates who would be valuable to society and warned students against cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice and other social vices. He maintained that UNIBEN operates a zero-tolerance policy toward such misconduct, warning that offenders would face expulsion.

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the new students to remain focused, work closely with lecturers and staff, and make proper use of academic, sporting and extracurricular facilities available on campus. He reminded them that their primary purpose in the university was to learn, grow and discard habits that could hinder their aspirations.

He also expressed appreciation to parents, guardians and sponsors for entrusting the university with the education and welfare of their children and wards, congratulating the students and wishing them success in their academic pursuits.
