Tragedy struck in Kano State on Wednesday as two persons, including a two-year-old boy, lost their lives in separate drowning incidents involving open wells in different communities.
The first incident occurred in Kwankwaso town, Madobi Local Government Area, where a two-year-old boy, Sa’idu Ahmad, reportedly drowned after falling into a well. The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to Abdullahi, the Fire Service received an emergency call at about 12:15 p.m. from the Deputy Director of the Service, Rabiu Garba, alerting them that a child had fallen into a well. A rescue team was immediately deployed to the scene.
“The victim was rescued unconscious and later handed over to Umar Shehu of the Madobi Police Division,” Abdullahi said, adding that the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.
In a similar development, a 28-year-old man, Suleiman Sani, also drowned in a well in Karofawa Yan Kifi Village, Ghari Local Government Area, later the same day. Abdullahi said the distress call was received by officers at the Ghari fire station on Wednesday evening.
“Our rescue team quickly mobilised to the scene. The victim was rescued unconscious and later confirmed dead by his parents,” he said. The deceased was subsequently handed over to the Village Head of Karofawa, Alhaji Musa Aliyu, while investigations continue to determine the cause of the incident.
The Kano State Fire Service expressed condolences to the bereaved families and used the opportunity to caution residents against leaving wells uncovered. Abdullahi urged the public to take safety precautions to prevent similar tragedies, noting that open wells pose serious dangers, especially to children.
These incidents add to a growing list of well-related accidents across the country, raising concerns about safety awareness and preventive measures in residential communities.
