An Istanbul court has ordered the pre-trial detention of 20 individuals, including prominent Super Lig players, club presidents, and referees. This development follows a series of arrests and suspensions aimed at addressing widespread insider betting within the country’s professional football leagues.
Among those detained are Galatasaray defender Metehan Baltacı and Fenerbahçe midfielder Mert Hakan Yandaş. Baltacı admitted to placing bets during his youth team years but denied any involvement as a senior player.
Yandaş, on the other hand, has denied any participation in match-related gambling activities. Former Adana Demirspor president Murat Sancak was also arrested, with authorities noting suious financial transactions linked to illegal betting.
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has been proactive in addressing the issue, previously suspending 149 referees and 1,024 players across all leagues due to similar allegations. The federation has also imposed temporary bans ranging from 45 days to 12 months on 102 players, including 25 from the Super Lig, as part of its disciplinary measures.
