The United States has launched a year-long celebration marking its 250th anniversary, with a striking projection illuminating the Washington Monument on New Year’s Eve. This event transformed the iconic monument into a towering birthday candle, kicking off festivities that will culminate in the semiquincentennial on July 4, 2026.

The initial projection showcased a 250-foot candle and ran from 7 p.m. until just after midnight, setting the stage for a series of nightly thematic displays from 7 to 10 p.m. These projections will explore five key themes: Discovery, Revolution (Independence), Westward Expansion, the Industrial Revolution and the 20th Century, and Modern Day and Future of the Nation, narrating America’s journey over the past 250 years.

The event is organized by Freedom 250, a national, nonpartisan group established by President Donald Trump. Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250, noted the significance of the projection in heralding a noteworthy year for the nation.

The displays are free and accessible to the public, positioned for viewing across the National Mall. This illumination marks only the second time in history that the Washington Monument has been lit in such a way, the first being in 2019 to commemorate the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Looking forward, Freedom 250 plans additional events throughout the year, including a prayer service in the spring and a summer fair. These initiatives aim to evoke patriotism, pride, and the pioneering spirit of America, laying a foundation for the next 250 years. The illumination serves as a beacon for all Americans to partake in this celebration of the resilient American spirit.
