A quiet residential estate in Abuja has been thrown into grief and fear following the tragic death of 26-year-old soprano singer Ifunaya Lucy Nwagene, a celebrated member of the Amemuso Choir. The Enugu State indigene, admired for her calm nature and extraordinary voice, reportedly met her untimely end near a canal running behind her apartment, sparking questions about estate safety and public health management.

Neighbours pointed to the canal as a potential source of reptiles, including snakes, which could have entered homes through cracks in fences, poles, or open water pipes. Adams, the estate gateman, highlighted gaps in the perimeter fence and inconsistent fumigation practices as contributing factors, noting that residents often handle pest control individually.

Director of the Amemuso Choir, Sam C. Ezugwu, described Ifunaya’s death as devastating, recalling her growth in the choir since 2020 and her emergence as one of its brightest stars. He lamented the loss of a talented voice with promising projects lined up for 2025.

Residents and colleagues now call for urgent action on canal management, estate security, fumigation, and emergency response to prevent further tragedies in the community.
