President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday decorated Tunji Disu with his new rank as Acting Inspector General of Police at the State House in Abuja.

The ceremony, held at the President office, was attended by the National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and the immediate past IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

Disu appointment comes 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13 2026, when he would attain the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, under the amended Police Act which grants Inspectors General a four year tenure regardless of age, he may remain in office until 2030 subject to confirmation.

Tinubu, who personally pinned the new insignia on Disu uniform, commended Egbetokun for his service. The decoration followed Egbetokun resignation, officially attributed to family reasons, though presidency sources indicated he was asked to step down during a meeting at the Presidential Villa.

Disu will serve in an acting capacity pending confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council and subsequent approval by the Senate in line with constitutional provisions.

His appointment is expected to trigger the retirement of several senior officers including Deputy Inspectors General and Assistant Inspectors General who are senior to him, in keeping with longstanding police tradition.

Born on April 13 1966 in Lagos, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992. A graduate of Lagos State University and holder of two master degrees, he has served in various operational and leadership roles across the country.

He gained national recognition as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, rebranding the unit as The Good Guys and leading it to regional awards. He later headed the Intelligence Response Team and served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.

Beyond policing, Disu is an accomplished judoka and patron of the Nigerian Police Judo Association.
