As political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, Sokoto State is emerging as a critical battleground, with major parties already positioning for a fiercely contested governorship race.

The ruling All Progressives Congress is expected to field incumbent governor Ahmed Aliyu for a second term. Backed by the advantages of incumbency, including access to state structures and resources, Aliyu is also likely to benefit from the strong political machinery of his mentor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. Analysts believe this alliance could provide a solid grassroots network capable of sustaining APC dominance in the state.

However, opposition parties are intensifying efforts to challenge the ruling party. The African Democratic Congress has been particularly active, expanding its grassroots presence through aggressive membership drives and community engagement. Several notable figures are reportedly eyeing the party’s ticket, including Yusuf Suleiman, Manir Muhammad Dan Iya, Faruku Malami Yabo, and Bashir Dan Fili.

Security concerns are expected to play a major role in the campaign, with rising cases of banditry and kidnapping in the North West likely to dominate political discourse. The ADC is already criticising what it describes as insufficient responses to insecurity, positioning itself as a viable alternative for voters seeking ce.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party continues to grapple with internal divisions that threaten its chances. The party remains split into factions, including one aligned with Nyesom Wike and another linked to Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, complicating efforts to present a united front.

Key figures such as Aminu Waziri Tambuwal still wield influence, but debates persist over his legacy and political direction. The PDP’s inability to rally around a single strong candidate remains a major challenge as the election approaches.

With alliances shifting and consultations ongoing, Sokoto’s 2027 governorship race is shaping up to be a contest defined by incumbency strength, opposition resurgence and internal party struggles.
