Governor Seyi Makinde has openly stated why he will not back President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027, warning that efforts to weaken the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could harm Nigeria’s democracy.

During a media interaction in Ibadan, Makinde recounted a meeting he attended with President Tinubu, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and others. He revealed that Wike offered to “hold the PDP” for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, a pledge Makinde said was unsolicited by the President.

While acknowledging Wike’s freedom to support Tinubu, Makinde emphasized that he has chosen not to do so. He believes Nigerians should be free to make their own political choices and cautioned that attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to weaken the PDP risk undermining multiparty democracy. He called on all democrats to resist any moves toward a one-party system.

When asked about his own political ambitions, Makinde said he is qualified, and even overqualified to serve as Nigeria’s president in 2027. He pointed to his two terms as governor of Oyo State, his executive experience, and his background running a private company from a young age.

“I have heard people ask if I am positioning myself for the 2027 presidency. Let me make this clear: I am qualified. I am even overqualified. By the end of May 2027, by God’s grace, I would have completed two tenures as governor of Oyo State. Professionally, I ran a company from a very young age,” Makinde said.

Makinde also shared his vision for a lasting legacy, stressing the importance of building strong institutions rather than focusing only on physical infrastructure. He argued that while infrastructure projects are quickly forgotten, strong systems ensure sustainable development and good governance.

Addressing allegations of land grabbing related to the Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road project, Makinde clarified that the 500-metre corridor was officially gazetted on November 19, 2018, before his administration took office in May 2019. He explained that the 110-kilometre circular road aims to reduce traffic congestion in Ibadan, provide a modern motorway, and create an industrial and commercial corridor to boost Oyo State’s economy.

On compensation for residents affected by the project, Makinde said his administration is taking a humane approach, offering payments even to those without formal land titles if they can prove residence, to help facilitate resettlement.

This candid discussion highlights Makinde’s political stance, his commitment to democracy, and his focus on sustainable development for Nigeria.
