Senate President Godswill Akpabio has described Nigeria’s security challenges as “organised and orchestrated insecurity” fueled by terrorism, banditry, and insurgency. He made these remarks on Thursday during the 14th national caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

Akpabio expressed sadness over the deliberate torment inflicted on Nigeria and acknowledged that as the country grows, envy and jealousy can lead to hatred and challenges. He assured President Bola Tinubu of the caucus’s full support and prayers for him to overcome the nation’s difficulties.

The Senate President also aligned the caucus with states mourning victims of attacks by terrorists, bandits, and insurgents. He commended President Tinubu for securing the release of over 100 kidnapped children recently and prayed for the safe return of the remaining captives.

Akpabio extended condolences to families of victims and members of the armed forces who lost their lives protecting citizens and property.

Highlighting regional security, he noted that Nigeria’s stability is linked to developments in neighboring countries. He praised Tinubu’s intervention in Benin Republic to stabilize democracy and called for continued regional cooperation.

On legislative actions, Akpabio revealed that the Senate has taken “bold decisions” to combat criminality, including efforts to classify kidnapping as terrorism. This would make kidnappers liable to the death penalty once the bill is signed into law. He also urged governors to enforce capital punishment laws, warning that hesitation to sign execution warrants could encourage criminals.
