Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed plans to pour resources into sports facilities, athlete training, and collaborative projects to strengthen the city’s claim as Africa’s hub for sport and entertainment.

The governor made the pledge while accepting the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club’s 1895 Iconic Award at a gala celebrating the club’s 130th anniversary. The event took place at the Lawn Tennis Club at TBS on Lagos Island and carried the theme “Legacy of the Courts.” Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat stood in for the governor at the ceremony.

Sanwo-Olu said the state government sees sport as a powerful engine for empowering young people, growing tourism, expanding the economy, and raising Lagos’s profile on the global stage. He promised continued investment in facilities, talent pipelines, and partnerships that will help cement the city’s reputation in sports and entertainment.

Reflecting on the anniversary theme, the governor noted that true legacies take time to build and depend on commitment, shared values, and optimism. He described the award as recognition of the club’s long history of resilience and excellence.

Sanwo-Olu praised the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club as more than a venue for matches. He said it has been a cultural institution for generations, a place that promotes discipline, friendship, and community. The club’s courts have helped produce champions, inspired young athletes, fostered international sporting links, and contributed to Lagos’s social identity, he added.
