Real Madrid will part ways with veteran defender David Alaba, who is leaving the club on a free transfer at the end of the current season. The 33-year-old Austrian international has been with Los Blancos since 2021, arriving from Bayern Munich with extensive experience and versatility. However, a significant ACL injury in December 2023 sidelined him for over a year, causing him to miss Euro 2024 and prompting a reevaluation of his position in the team.

Despite recovering, Alaba now finds himself behind younger players like Jarrad Huijsen, Éder Militão, and Antonio Rüdiger in the defensive lineup. He also faces competition for a role as the fourth central defender. In a recent interview, Alaba dismissed rumors of his departure, stating “Era todo mentira” (It was all a lie) and asserting his commitment to the club, while expressing readiness to contribute more after the international break.

Alaba’s exit is part of a broader squad overhaul under new manager Xabi Alonso, who has made significant signings such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Franco Mastantuono. Real Madrid aims to strengthen their defensive lineup by targeting Premier League talents like Ibrahima Konaté and William Saliba. Although Alaba’s departure is viewed as “regrettable” given his influence and experience, the club remains focused on future development.

Throughout his time at Madrid, Alaba has won two La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies, showcasing his versatility in playing both as a central defender and a left-back. As he prepares to leave Santiago Bernabéu, Alaba’s next destination is uncertain, but his skills and experience will be significant assets for any future club.
