Valentine Obienyem, a prominent Nigerian commentator and legal practitioner, has announced his intention to formally challenge the diplomatic appointment of Reno Omokri, a controversial figure in Nigerian politics. Obienyem plans to petition any country where Omokri may be posted, urging them to reject the nominee’s credentials.

This development highlights increasing divisions over recent diplomatic nominations, with critics questioning the suitability of certain individuals for high-level international roles.

Obienyem, who previously advised former presidential candidate Peter Obi, has prepared a detailed petition addressed to the foreign and internal affairs ministries of the prospective host nation. The petition raises serious concerns about Omokri’s character, past behavior, and professional conduct.

Central to the opposition is Omokri’s outspoken criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. During the 2023 election cycle, Omokri gained notoriety for his social media activism and participation in protests questioning the president’s health and academic credentials. Obienyem argues that such actions cast doubt on Omokri’s ability to maintain stable and impartial diplomatic relations.

“The nominee’s record shows a tendency to prioritize personal gain over national interest,” Obienyem stated. “Allowing someone with this history to represent Nigeria abroad risks undermining the integrity of our diplomatic service.”

Obienyem emphasized that his challenge is driven by a responsibility to ensure Nigeria is represented by individuals of proven stability and credibility internationally, rather than personal animosity. He is prepared to present evidence, including videos and social media posts, demonstrating Omokri’s past statements and actions that, in his view, conflict with the principles required for a senior diplomatic role.

Among the concerns is Omokri’s previous pledge never to collaborate with the current administration, which Obienyem says raises questions about his reliability and professional consistency, qualities essential for effective diplomacy.

This challenge adds to the ongoing debate over Nigeria’s diplomatic appointments and the standards expected of those representing the country on the global stage.
